Nigerian Army Uncovers ISWAP, Boko Haram Drone Tactics, Tracks Sponsors

By Momodu Favour

The Nigerian Army has announced a major intelligence breakthrough in its ongoing fight against insurgency, revealing that it has uncovered drone warfare tactics employed by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.

According to the military, the discovery includes detailed insights into the groups’ use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for planning, deployment, and operational attacks.

Security sources disclosed on Monday, March 23, 2026, that the army has also made progress in tracking the external sponsors and supply networks that support these insurgent operations.

Military analysts described the development as a significant step in counter-insurgency efforts, enabling the army to anticipate drone attacks, disrupt logistics chains, and improve battlefield responses.

“Understanding how these groups acquire, operate, and deploy drones is crucial to neutralising threats and protecting civilians,” one source said.

The Nigerian Army’s announcement comes amid rising concerns about the use of drones in asymmetric warfare by insurgent groups, which have increasingly targeted military installations and communities in the North-East region.

Authorities emphasized that the intelligence breakthrough will strengthen ongoing operations, improve coordination with regional partners, and help dismantle funding networks sustaining ISWAP and Boko Haram activities.

The military stated that further details, including operational successes resulting from this intelligence, would be shared in due course as part of efforts to reassure the public of its commitment to security.
