The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division Strike Force launched a major offensive against notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, targeting his hideouts in the Fakai area between Zamfara and Sokoto States. The operation aimed to dismantle the criminal infrastructure that has long enabled kidnappings and cattle rustling across the Northwest.
During the mission, the military convoy experienced a temporary setback when two combat vehicles broke down near Maberaya village. Exploiting this mechanical failure, Turji’s bandits launched a coordinated ambush from the surrounding hills, leading to a fierce and immediate gun battle.
Despite the surprise attack, Nigerian troops utilized superior firepower to repel the insurgents and push deep into their forest enclaves. The encounter resulted in “scores” of bandits being neutralized, marking a significant blow to the group’s operational capacity and manpower.
The skirmish was not without casualties for the security forces, as three soldiers and one DSS operative sustained injuries during the fighting. The wounded personnel were quickly evacuated to the 8 Division Military Hospital in Sokoto, where they are currently in stable condition.
In a related update, the military and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) debunked viral social media rumors about a massive boat mishap in Sabon Gida. Reports claiming that 150 bandits drowned while fleeing were confirmed as false, as the river in that area is currently not navigable.
This successful raid on the Kagara Forest stronghold has disrupted the command structure of Turji’s gang and weakened their ability to launch further attacks. The operation represents a critical step in the ongoing effort to restore peace and stability to the embattled region.
Military authorities continue to urge local residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing actionable intelligence.
By maintaining pressure on these criminal elements, the Nigerian Army aims to permanently dislodge banditry from the Northwest.
