Picking Obi as Running Mate Could Cost Atiku Adamawa Support, Says Omokri

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has warned that choosing Peter Obi as a running mate could cost Atiku Abubakar crucial political support in Adamawa State ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Omokri made the remark while reacting to suggestions by media entrepreneur Dele Momodu that a joint Atiku–Obi ticket could defeat incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election.

According to Omokri, while Atiku remains a strong political figure with influence across Nigeria, pairing with Obi could alienate certain voter blocs in the North, including in Atiku’s home state of Adamawa.

He argued that political choices in Northern Nigeria are often shaped by complex religious, historical and regional considerations, warning that such a ticket might be interpreted negatively by some voters in the region.

Omokri also suggested that some past political controversies involving Obi may still influence public perception among segments of the northern electorate.

He noted that these sentiments could weaken Atiku’s support base if the former Anambra governor is selected as his running mate. The former presidential aide further criticised proponents of an Atiku–Obi alliance, saying many of them underestimate the political dynamics and sensitivities that shape electoral outcomes in Northern Nigeria.

The debate comes amid growing discussions about potential opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general election. Political observers say opposition figures are exploring various coalition options to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu’s possible re-election bid.

While neither Atiku nor Obi has formally announced plans regarding a joint ticket, analysts say conversations about possible alliances and strategies are likely to intensify as the 2027 elections draw closer.
