The Cross River State Police have arrested Ibiong Uyime Bassey for allegedly torturing her five-year-old niece, Edidiong Uwem Aniefiok.

Officers from the ‘A’ Division took action after a disturbing video of the abuse surfaced online.

The incident went viral, showing the young girl with a bleeding face and severely swollen eyes. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday confirmed the suspect, a resident of Atimbo Road, was apprehended following the public outcry.

Preliminary investigations revealed the suspect allegedly struck the child with a spatula, causing significant trauma to her right eye. Medical examinations also uncovered multiple bruises across the girl’s body, indicating a history of sustained physical abuse.

Reports suggest the brutal assault was triggered by a domestic dispute over food. It was gathered that the young girl was manhandled simply because she took a piece of meat from a pot of soup.

Despite her age, the victim was reportedly being used as a nanny for one of the suspect’s four children.

This situation highlights the exploitative and dangerous conditions the minor faced while living with her aunt.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have promised to provide further updates and ensure justice is served for the minor, emphasizing their commitment to tackling child abuse.
