Fintiri Sends Emir on Indefinite Suspension Over Alleged Corruption

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has indefinitely suspended an Emir over allegations of corruption.
The suspension, announced late Saturday, comes amid heightened efforts by the state government to reform traditional institutions and ensure integrity among traditional rulers.
Although the identity of the Emir and the specific allegations against him have not yet been made public, the government has assured citizens that a thorough investigation is ongoing.
Governor Fintiri, who recently signed the Adamawa State Chiefs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, has been vocal about his zero-tolerance stance on corruption. The new law grants the governor powers to create and restructure emirates and chiefdoms, and to remove traditional rulers found guilty of misconduct.
In December 2024, Fintiri created seven new monarchies across the state, appointing emirs and chiefs he described as “deserving and widely respected.” During the swearing-in of the new traditional leaders and other government appointees, he warned that anyone found engaging in corrupt practices would be promptly removed from office.
“This administration will not hesitate to discipline any leader — traditional or otherwise — who breaches the trust of the people,” Fintiri said at a recent event.
The suspension has sparked discussions across Adamawa, with many residents lauding the governor’s decision as a bold step towards restoring credibility within the traditional institution. However, some traditional council members have called for caution, urging that the investigation be fair and transparent.
The Adamawa State Government has reiterated its commitment to following due process and ensuring justice in the matter. Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
