US Imposes Visa Restrictions on Rwandan Officials Over Alleged Support for M23 Rebels

US Imposes Visa Restrictions on Rwandan Officials Over Alleged Support for M23 Rebels The United States Department of State has announced visa restrictions on several Rwandan officials over allegations that they are supporting the March 23 Movement (M23), a rebel group operating in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a statement released on Friday, the U.S. government said the visa restrictions are part of efforts to hold accountable individuals believed to be contributing to instability and violence in the mineral-rich eastern region of the DRC. The sanctions will prevent the affected officials and their immediate family members from entering the United States.

Washington accused Rwanda of backing the M23 rebel group, which has been involved in ongoing clashes with Congolese government forces and has seized several strategic territories in eastern Congo in recent months.

According to U.S. officials, the visa restrictions are intended to pressure those responsible for undermining peace efforts and prolonging the conflict in the region. The measure follows earlier sanctions imposed on individuals linked to Rwanda’s military for alleged involvement in supporting the insurgent group.

The conflict involving the March 23 Movement has intensified tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Kinshasa repeatedly accusing Kigali of providing military assistance to the rebels. Rwanda, however, has consistently denied the allegations.

Kigali maintains that its actions are driven by security concerns, particularly the presence of armed groups in eastern Congo that it says pose a threat to its national security. The renewed fighting has worsened the humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo, where millions of civilians have been displaced by violence involving multiple armed groups.

The United States said it remains committed to working with regional and international partners to restore stability and support diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict in the Great Lakes region of Africa.
