Tinubu Suspends FAAN Cashless Toll Policy After Airport Chaos

President Bola Tinubu has directed the suspension of the cashless toll payment system recently introduced by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at major airports nationwide.

The system, which took effect on March 1, 2026, eliminated cash payments at airport toll gates and required motorists to pay using prepaid cards or electronic payment methods.

The rollout was marked by widespread confusion and heavy traffic congestion, leaving passengers and drivers stranded for several hours at airport entrances.

Many travellers reported missing flights or experiencing delays in picking up passengers.

Speaking to State House correspondents after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed that the President approved the suspension.

According to the minister, Tinubu expressed concern over the difficulties Nigerians faced during the implementation and instructed the ministry to reassess and improve the policy before reintroducing it.

Keyamo added that motorists who have already purchased prepaid access cards may continue to use them, while cash payments will also remain acceptable until a new approach is announced by the ministry and relevant agencies.
