FG Files 13-Count Treason Charge Against Alleged Coup Plotters

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge against six individuals accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a case that has heightened concerns over national security and stability.

The charges, which border on treason and related offences, were filed before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja. According to details of the charge sheet, the suspects include a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three other individuals.

Authorities allege that the defendants conspired to undermine the government and engaged in acts considered a threat to the constitutional order. The Federal Government accused the suspects of attempting to “levy war against the state,” a key element of treason under Nigerian law. Additional counts reportedly include conspiracy, failure to disclose information relating to the alleged plot, and other security-related offences.

The case follows months of investigation into what officials described as a covert attempt to destabilise the current administration. Security agencies had earlier made a series of arrests linked to the alleged conspiracy, with some suspects said to have ties to both military and civilian networks.

Legal analysts note that treason remains one of the most serious offences under Nigerian law, often carrying severe penalties upon conviction. The prosecution is expected to rely on intelligence reports, witness testimonies, and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

The defendants are expected to be arraigned before the court in the coming days, where they will formally enter their pleas.

The proceedings are likely to attract widespread public attention given the gravity of the allegations and the profile of those involved.

The Federal Government has yet to release further details on the full scope of the alleged plot, while security agencies continue efforts to apprehend any additional suspects linked to the case.
