Premier League Round-Up: Bournemouth Held, Everton Boost Top-Seven Push, Sunderland Shock Leeds, Wolves Stun Liverpool

Midweek action in the Premier League delivered drama at both ends of the table, with dropped points, vital wins and a stoppage-time shock at Molineux.

At the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth and Brentford shared the spoils in a goalless draw. The hosts fashioned the clearer chances, with Marcus Tavernier curling inches wide in the 23rd minute before striking the base of the post shortly after the restart. He was also unfortunate not to win a penalty following a challenge from Kayode.

Ouattara and Sepp van den Berg both went close, the latter seeing a header palmed away by Djordje Petrovic, while Tavernier clipped the outside of the post again in the 77th minute. Evanilson had the ball in the net two minutes later, only for his effort to be ruled offside. Late drama followed in stoppage time when substitute, Kroupi’s close-range attempt ricocheted off Enes Unal and drifted wide.

Bournemouth climb to ninth with the point, having registered 13 shots and an xG of 1.99, compared to Brentford’s five attempts and 0.40 xG. The visitors remain seventh.

At Goodison Park, Everton secured their first home league win in six matches with a 2-0 victory over Burnley. James Tarkowski opened scoring before half-time, powering home James Garner’s dangerous free-kick.

Iliman Ndiaye had a goal disallowed for offside early in the second half, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall doubled the lead soon after with a composed finish. Idrissa Gueye struck the frame of the goal, while Jordan Pickford denied Burnley a late consolation.

Everton’s 1.10 xG edged Burnley’s 0.79, and the Toffees now sit just one point off the top seven ahead of a trip to Arsenal. Burnley, meanwhile, remain eight points from safety.

At Elland Road, Sunderland claimed a hard-fought 1-0 away win over Leeds United. After a quiet first half, Leeds thought they had taken the lead through Joe Rodon’s header, but VAR ruled it offside.

Moments later, a VAR review penalised Ethan Ampadu for handball, and Diarra converted from the spot to give Sunderland the advantage. Leeds piled on the pressure, forcing multiple saves and firing wide on several occasions, but could not find a breakthrough despite 13 minutes of added time.

The defeat marks Leeds’ second consecutive home loss, while Sunderland move up to 11th, reaching the 40-point mark and virtually ensuring survival with nine games remaining.

The biggest shock came at Molineux, where Wolverhampton Wanderers stunned Liverpool 2-1.

Liverpool, chasing a top-four spot, struggled to impose themselves despite early efforts from Hugo Ekitike and Dominik Szoboszlai. Cody Gakpo struck the woodwork early in the second half, but Wolves broke the deadlock in the 78th minute as Rodrigo Gomes clipped home after fine work from Tolu Arokodare.

Mohamed Salah quickly equalised after capitalising on a defensive error, yet just as the visitors pushed for a winner, Andre netted his first goal for Wolves in the 94th minute. His deflected strike off Joe Gomez left Alisson stranded and sealed a dramatic victory for the league’s bottom club.

The result denies Liverpool the chance to break into the top four, while Wolves celebrate another memorable triumph in their fight for survival.
