Kano Court Sentences 2 to Death for Killing Newlywed
A Kano High Court on Tuesday sentenced Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya to death for the murder of newlywed Yazid Haruna.
The duo were found guilty of fatally stabbing Haruna during a violent home invasion.
Trial Judge, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ruled that Hussaini and Zakariyya were culpable for three charges: conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide, sentencing them to be hanged for the murder.
The prosecution, led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the attack occurred in the early hours of June 11, 2025, at Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano. The two men, armed with knives and machetes, reportedly broke into Haruna’s residence, stole two mobile phones and N19,500 in cash, and inflicted fatal wounds to his stomach, chest, and head.
“The defendants intended to rob the victim and violently carried out their plan, ultimately causing his death,” Abba-Sorondinki told the court.
Three witnesses were called, and medical reports were presented to corroborate the prosecution’s case.
The accused denied the allegations, but the court held that the evidence proved their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Defense counsel Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya urged leniency, but Justice Adamu-Aliyu described the act as barbaric and emphasised the growing threat of violent robberies.
The court sentenced the pair to one year each for conspiracy, life imprisonment for robbery, and death by hanging for culpable homicide.
