INEC Reschedules Osun Governorship Election to August 15, 2026
By Momodu Favour
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially rescheduled the forthcoming Osun State Governorship Election from Saturday, August 8, 2026, to Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The electoral body disclosed that while several preparatory activities for both the Osun and Ekiti governorship elections have already been concluded, all remaining processes will strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
Although INEC did not immediately provide detailed reasons for the shift in date, the adjustment is expected to allow the commission adequate time to fine-tune logistical arrangements and ensure full legal compliance with statutory timelines governing elections.
The commission emphasized its commitment to transparency, due process, and adherence to electoral guidelines.
According to the statement, completed activities including party primaries and submission of candidates’ lists remain valid, while outstanding steps such as publication of final candidate lists, campaigns, and deployment of sensitive materials will proceed in accordance with the updated timetable.
Political parties and stakeholders are therefore expected to realign their campaign schedules with the new election date.
Observers note that such adjustments, while not unprecedented, often aim to strengthen administrative efficiency and reduce operational lapses on election day.
The Osun governorship election is widely regarded as a significant political contest, given the state’s strategic importance in the South-West region and its history of keenly contested elections. With the new date now fixed for August 15, 2026, attention shifts to how political parties will intensify mobilization efforts in the days leading up to the polls.
INEC reassured voters in Osun State of its preparedness to conduct a credible, free, and fair election, urging the electorate to remain engaged and verify their voter information ahead of the rescheduled date.
