Protests Erupt in Kaduna Over El-Rufai’s Detention

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Youths in Kaduna on Wednesday took to the streets to protest the ongoing detention of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Demonstrators blocked major roads, carrying placards and demanding his immediate release from security custody.

The protest follows El-Rufai’s arrest over allegations concerning his eight-year tenure as governor. Supporters labeled the detention as politically motivated “persecution” intended to tarnish his reputation and silence his influence.

Protesters highlighted El-Rufai’s developmental contributions to the state, arguing he should not be treated like a criminal.

They urged the Federal Government to respect his fundamental rights throughout any legal investigations.

Heavily armed security forces were deployed to strategic points to maintain order and prevent escalation. Despite the intense police presence, the youths remained firm in their call for an unconditional release.

Organizers warned that mobilization would continue until justice is served for the former leader. They described the situation as a distraction from Nigeria’s current economic struggles and a threat to democratic principles.

Demanding an end to his incarceration without trial, a spokesperson for the group stated, “We are calling on the government to release Mallam Nasir El-Rufai immediately, as his continued detention without trial is an infringement on his rights and a threat to our democracy.”
