The Ebonyi State Government has officially relaxed the curfew imposed on the Amasiri community following violent events linked to the January 29 killings at Okporojo.
This decision was reached during a State Security Council meeting on Tuesday, where officials reviewed the progress of the ongoing investigations.
Under the new directives, movements within the affected areas are now permitted daily between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
This adjustment aims to ease the burden on local residents while maintaining security oversight as the state works to restore permanent peace to the region.
Governor Francis Nwifuru emphasized that the decision followed a thorough review of intelligence reports. He stated, “To further excavate facts surrounding the killings, the Council agreed to adopt more stringent measures for peace to return to Amasiri and Okporojo communities soonest.”
The Governor also confirmed that those found responsible for the violence will face legal consequences. He noted, “Council hinted that those arrested in connection with the crises will be charged to court,” signaling a commitment to justice for the victims of the attack.
Despite the relaxation of movement restrictions, the state government has decided that all schools in the Amasiri community must remain closed.
This precautionary measure is intended to ensure the safety of students and staff until the final results of the investigation are determined.
Nwifuru explained the rationale behind the continued school closures, saying, “The Council agreed that all schools in Amasiri should remain closed pending the determination and conclusion of investigations to forestall further occurrence.”
The original curfew was a response to a deadly attack on Okporojo village that resulted in four deaths and the destruction of over nine houses. Earlier measures included the dissolution of community leadership and the temporary closure of the Amasiri Development Centre.
Governor Nwifuru reassured the public that security agencies are working tirelessly to stabilize the community. Additionally, the government plans to submit a bill to the State House of Assembly to repeal the law establishing the Amasiri Development Centre as part of long-term reforms.
