A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia has left 10 people dead, including the suspect.
RCMP officers responded to an active shooter report Tuesday afternoon, discovering victims throughout the building. The remote community is currently in shock as the investigation into Canada’s deadliest school shooting in years begins.
Beyond the school fatalities, police found two victims at a nearby home linked to the attacker. One victim died during transport, raising the death toll to 10, while 25 others are being treated for injuries. Two individuals remain in critical condition after being airlifted for emergency surgery.
The suspect, described as a woman with brown hair, was found dead inside the high school from a self-inflicted wound. While authorities have identified her, they have not yet disclosed a motive or her name.
Police confirmed there are no other suspects and the public threat has been neutralized.
Premier David Eby expressed profound grief, stating the tragedy has “irreversibly changed” the small town of 2,400 residents. The provincial government has deployed counseling services and additional police resources to support the community. Schools in the area remain closed as the town mourns.
Regarding the devastation, Premier David Eby stated: “Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones. Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.”
The shooting has reignited national debates over gun control and mental health resources in Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney praised the bravery of first responders who arrived at the scene within minutes. Investigation teams continue to work on-site to provide answers to grieving families.
