Police Arrest Suspect in Kebbi State Wife’s Murder
The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a man suspected of killing his wife in a domestic violence incident that occurred in Bayawa community, Augie Local Government Area of the state.
Police identified the suspect as Sule Gurmu, who allegedly assaulted his 25-year-old wife, Umaima Maidawa, during a domestic disagreement on January 13, 2026.
Investigators disclosed that the woman sustained fatal injuries after being struck with a wooden farm tool handle and was pronounced dead shortly after the attack.
Following the incident, the suspect reportedly fled the community, prompting a coordinated search across neighbouring states. He was eventually apprehended in Katami town in Sokoto State through a joint operation involving the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Authorities said the arrest followed directives from the Chairman of Augie Local Government, Yahaya Augie, who ordered security agencies to ensure the suspect was brought to justice.
The local government chairman also visited the scene of the incident and oversaw the transfer of the victim’s body to a hospital in Argungu for post-mortem examination.
Reacting to the development, Augie described the incident as unacceptable and vowed that acts of domestic violence and criminal behaviour would not be tolerated in the area.
He commended security operatives for ending the manhunt and assured residents that the suspect would face prosecution.
The Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the arrest on Sunday, stating that the suspect would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the killing has sparked grief and outrage in Bayawa community, with residents calling for swift justice. Advocacy groups in the state have also renewed calls for stronger public awareness and enforcement of laws against domestic abuse.
