Armed Forces Remembrance Day: PDP Faction Calls for Improved Welfare for Military Personnel

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has called on the Federal Government to prioritise enhanced welfare packages for officers and men of the Armed Forces to boost morale and strengthen national security.

The PDP National Working Committee (NWC), under Turaki’s leadership, made the call in a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15 to honour the sacrifices of fallen and serving military personnel.

Turaki stressed that adequate welfare and sustained support for the military are critical to ensuring effectiveness in the ongoing fight against insecurity across the country.

He also urged the Federal Government to provide sufficient funding for security agencies to enable them to discharge their duties efficiently and restore peace and stability nationwide.

“As our country marks the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, we convey our deepest condolences to the families of members of the Armed Forces who died in active service while executing their mandate of protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country,” Turaki said.

He added, “We use this opportunity to demand improved welfare packages for members of the Armed Forces and all members of the security and intelligence community, to help them better discharge their assigned roles.

We also urge the Federal Government to adequately fund the security agencies to effectively neutralise agents of insecurity and restore peace and security to our country.”

The PDP faction also paid tribute to fallen heroes, noting that their sacrifices were central to the continued existence of Nigeria as a united nation.

Turaki cautioned both state and non-state actors against actions capable of destabilizing the country, stressing the need for collective commitment to national peace and unity.

“On a day like this, we acknowledge that they paid the supreme price for the continued existence of our country. In honour of those who have died to keep our country safe, we pray that their deaths may not be in vain and that their labours may not be forgotten,” he stated.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a solemn occasion to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel while renewing calls for improved welfare, adequate funding, and sustained national support for those tasked with safeguarding the nation’s security.
