28 Killed as Construction Crane Crashes Onto Moving Train in Thailand

At least 28 people were killed and dozens injured on Wednesday after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Thailand, authorities have confirmed.

The incident occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeast of the capital Bangkok, at a site linked to a China-backed high-speed rail project.

According to officials, the crane fell across the railway line as the train was passing, causing several carriages to derail.

Footage from the scene, verified by AFP, showed the broken structure of the massive crane resting on concrete pillars, while smoke rose from the damaged train below. Several coaches were seen tilted off the tracks following the impact.

Emergency responders and rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the area, working to evacuate passengers trapped inside the derailed carriages.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Local authorities said investigations had commenced to determine the cause of the collapse, including whether safety standards were followed at the construction site.

Rail services along the affected route were immediately suspended.

The high-speed rail project, part of a broader infrastructure partnership between Thailand and China, has faced scrutiny in the past over construction delays and safety concerns.

Thai government officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that those responsible would be held accountable once investigations are concluded.
