Nigeria joins AU, Jordan, others to Reject Israel’s recognition of Somaliland
Nigeria, Jordan, Algeria, and over 20 other nations have formally opposed Israel’s decision to grant diplomatic recognition to Somaliland as a sovereign state.
These countries warned that the move breaches international law and poses a significant threat to the stability of the Horn of Africa.
Israel became the first country to recognize the self-declared republic, which separated from Somalia in 1991 but has remained unrecognized by any UN member state until now.
In a dedicated statement, the Nigerian government expressed its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to the political independence of all UN and African Union member states. Nigeria further clarified that it views the administration in Mogadishu as the only legitimate authority for the Somali people and cautioned that recognizing breakaway regions would only worsen existing regional crises.
Other global powers and organizations, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the African Union, have also voiced their disapproval of the Israeli move. A broad coalition of foreign ministers from countries such as Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, and Iran, alongside the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, issued a joint declaration describing the recognition as an unprecedented and dangerous act.
They argued that the decision violates the United Nations Charter and sets a troubling global precedent that could undermine the unity of sovereign nations and disrupt security across the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.
