Nigerian Triathlon Union Sets September 30 for Elective Congress
The Nigerian Triathlon Union has scheduled September 30, 2026, for its elective congress, with an electoral committee already constituted to oversee the process.
The decision was reached during a virtual meeting of the union’s executive board on Tuesday, August 18, which was attended by 21 board members.
The electoral committee will be chaired by sports administrator and NTU trustee, Babatunde Fatayi-Williams, a former president of the Nigerian Swimming Federation.
Other members of the committee are Deborah Chidobi of the Nigerian Olympic Committee and Dr Sunday Enimola, Chairman of the Ogun State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association.
The electoral timetable commenced with the opening of nominations on August 20. The nomination period is scheduled to close on September 8, while the list of eligible candidates is expected to be published on September 12.
The union is expected to proceed with the remaining stages of the electoral process ahead of the September 30 congress.
Triathlon is a multisport discipline comprising swimming, cycling and running. The sport, which emerged in the early 1970s, became an Olympic event and is recognised as a gender-equal sport.
The Nigerian Triathlon Union was established in November 2006 by sports administrators with experience in various national sports federations. Dr Lanre Glover served as its pioneer president, while Banji Oladapo, Babatunde Fatayi-Williams and Prince Wale Oladunjoye were among the founding members. Dr Gloria Obajimi was appointed the union’s first Secretary-General.
The NTU became a member of the International Triathlon Union in February 2007 and subsequently secured full membership of the African Triathlon Union at a congress in Mauritius in April of the same year.
The union also gained full membership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee in May 2007.
