Police Ban Sale, Use of Fireworks in Kogi Ahead of Yuletide
The Kogi State Police Command have announced an immediate ban on the sale, distribution, and use of all forms of fireworks across the state, citing security and safety concerns as the festive season approaches.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Aya, the command warned that items such as knockouts, bangers, and other explosive pyrotechnics pose significant risks, including fire outbreaks, injuries, and opportunities for criminal elements to cause panic or disguise unlawful activities.
The police noted that such incidents tend to increase during Christmas and New Year celebrations, making preventive action necessary.
Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, directed that anyone found selling, possessing, or using fireworks in any part of Kogi State will be arrested and prosecuted under existing laws.
He stressed that the police will not tolerate violations, especially at a time when maintaining public safety is a priority.
To ensure full compliance, the police have intensified patrols, surveillance, and monitoring operations in markets, residential areas, worship centres, event venues, and other public spaces. Residents have also been urged to assist security efforts by reporting illegal sales or use of fireworks to the nearest police division.
The command appealed to community leaders, traders, parents, and event organisers to cooperate with authorities, emphasising that the measure is meant to safeguard lives and property throughout the festive period.
