No Christian Genocide in Nigeria, Asserts AGF Fagbemi

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has publicly dismissed claims suggesting that Christians are being targeted for extinction in Nigeria, asserting that no religious group is currently under persecution in the country.

Speaking on Saturday at the coronation of the 21st Elerin of Erin-Ile in Kwara State, the AGF stated that the violent attacks and killings recorded across the nation transcend religious and ethnic lines.

“There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria. There is no persecution of any religion, sect or ethnic nationality,” Fagbemi declared.

He supported his stance by pointing out that violence is not limited to any particular group, noting that predominantly Muslim states, such as Zamfara and Sokoto, have also suffered repeated and severe incidents of killings and banditry.

“That is not to say the situation is okay, but it shows clearly that violence is not targeted at any religion,” he insisted.

The AGF urged Nigerians to “reject any insinuation that there is a Christian genocide in the country.”

While acknowledging the persistent insecurity challenges, Fagbemi maintained that the Federal Government is “winning the war against terrorism” and is intensifying efforts to curb all forms of criminality nationwide.

He assured citizens that the government is taking all necessary steps to ensure killings and banditry are “nipped in the bud.”

In addition to the security discourse, the AGF also urged Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that the current economic reforms are essential for building a stronger foundation for national development.

The ceremony also saw remarks from Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who affirmed the traditional institution’s role as a strategic partner in governance.
