Irabor Faults Public Reactions to Wike–Naval Officer Saga, Says Uniform Symbolises State Power

Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (retd.), has faulted public reactions to the recent confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, in Abuja.

Speaking on Thursday at the National Dialogue on Media, Terrorism, and National Security, held during the 21st All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Abuja, Irabor described many of the commentaries surrounding the incident as “misguided” and reflective of a poor understanding of the symbolism of the military uniform.

He noted that the uniform worn by members of the armed forces and security agencies represents the authority and sovereignty of the Nigerian state, stressing that disrespect toward those who wear it equates to undermining the state itself.

“Many of the reactions to the recent confrontation between the FCT Minister and a naval officer were misguided. People fail to appreciate what the uniform stands for it is not just clothing; it embodies the dignity, authority, and power of the state,” Irabor said.

The retired general cautioned against politicising issues involving security personnel, urging Nigerians to maintain respect for the nation’s institutions and those who serve in uniform.

“When you insult or demean an officer in uniform, you are not just insulting the individual; you are insulting the state whose authority that uniform represents,” he added.

Irabor, who served as Chief of Defence Staff between 2021 and 2023, called for greater media responsibility in reporting issues involving the military and security agencies. He said sensational coverage of such incidents could further erode public trust and embolden indiscipline.

“The media must play a role in fostering national cohesion. Reporting must be balanced and guided by a sense of responsibility to protect national security interests,” he said.

The former defence chief also emphasised the importance of maintaining civil-military relations based on mutual respect, noting that democratic stability depends on the collective recognition of state authority and the rule of law.

The National Dialogue was part of activities marking the 21st edition of the All Nigeria Editors’ Conference, which brought together senior journalists, policymakers, and security experts to discuss the role of the media in strengthening national security and countering violent extremism.
