Nigerian Army Denies Allegations of Officer’s Involvement in Awka South Electoral Violence

The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims circulating in a viral video that alleged the involvement of one of its officers in electoral violence during the recent election in Awka South Local Government Area.

The Army described the video as misleading and a deliberate attempt to tarnish its image and undermine public confidence in the military’s neutrality.

The viral clip, which emerged online shortly after voting concluded in parts of Anambra State, purportedly showed a soldier participating in election-related violence in Ward 5, Uku Oji Umubele, Awka South.

The footage quickly spread across social media, prompting public criticism and concern about the possible use of military personnel in partisan activities.

In an official statement released through its verified social media handles, the Nigerian Army refuted the claims, stating that the soldiers seen in the footage were responding to a distress call from National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who had been reportedly held hostage by suspected political thugs.

The Army clarified that its personnel were deployed purely for security duties and not for electoral manipulation or interference.

“The video is misleading and does not reflect the true situation of events in Awka South,” the statement read. “Our troops were not involved in any form of electoral violence.

They were on a legitimate mission to rescue corps members who were in danger during the elections.”

The Army also warned individuals and groups against spreading unverified information that could incite public tension or discredit security agencies performing lawful duties. It reiterated its commitment to professionalism, neutrality, and the protection of citizens during electoral processes.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivity around the role of security agencies in Nigerian elections. Election observers and civil society organizations have repeatedly emphasized the need for transparency and impartiality among the military and police to ensure credible electoral outcomes.

While the Army’s denial has helped clarify its position, the viral video continues to generate debate among citizens online, with some calling for an independent investigation to verify the events that occurred in Awka South.

The military,
election remained lawful and in line with its constitutional responsibilities to safeguard lives and property.
