FRSC Raises Concern Over 6,000 Unclaimed Driver’s Licences in Akwa Ibom
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Akwa Ibom State has raised concern over the growing number of unclaimed driver’s licences in its custody, revealing that about 6,000 licences remain uncollected across the state.
The State Sector Commander, Mr. Francis Ajatta, made this known on Friday during the 2025 “Ember Months” sensitisation campaign held in Uyo, the state capital. He said the pile-up of unclaimed licences has become worrisome, noting that some of the documents have even expired.
“Out of the 6,000 unclaimed driver’s licences, about 1,000 have already expired because their owners failed to collect them,” Ajatta disclosed. “We are appealing to motorists who have applied for their licences to visit the appropriate FRSC centres and claim them.”
He explained that many applicants often assume that their licences are not ready, even after the processing period has elapsed, while others simply fail to return for collection after capturing their biometric data.
The sector commander urged drivers to take the collection of their licences seriously, stressing that possession of a valid driver’s licence is a key requirement for road safety and compliance with traffic laws.
Speaking further, Ajatta said the FRSC remains committed to promoting safety on Nigerian roads, especially during the festive “Ember” months when travel and accident rates typically increase.
He also used the occasion to caution motorists against speeding, reckless driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol, warning that the corps would intensify patrols and enforcement operations throughout the period.
Ajatta encouraged members of the public to verify the status of their driver’s licences through the FRSC online portal or by visiting any licensing office in the state to avoid expiration or duplication issues.
The “Ember Months” campaign is part of the FRSC’s nationwide effort to reduce road crashes and fatalities as the year draws to a close.
