Killings in Nigeria Not Genocide, Says Pastor Adeferasin, Questions US ‘Sudden Love’ for Christians

Senior Nigerian cleric and founder of the Guiding Light Assembly, Pastor Wale Adefarasin, has questioned the recent expression of concern by the United States government over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, describing it as “sudden and suspicious.”

Reacting to reports of killings in parts of the country and recent remarks by some American political figures alleging genocide against Christians, Pastor Adefarasin said while attacks and violence have occurred over the years, they do not amount to genocide as claimed.

“I’m over 40 years old, and killings of Christians in Nigeria, unfortunately, are nothing new,” he said. “However, to label what’s happening as genocide is inaccurate and unhelpful. We must call things by their proper names.”

Adefarasin expressed concern that foreign narratives often oversimplify Nigeria’s complex security and ethnic challenges, which include attacks on Muslims, traditionalists, and other groups as well.

“The truth is, violence in Nigeria has many dimensions political, ethnic, criminal, and sometimes religious but it is not a one-sided war against Christians. The US and the international community should understand this before jumping to conclusions,” he added.

The cleric further urged American leaders to show consistency in their advocacy for justice, questioning why such concern is being amplified now.

“It’s curious that the US suddenly appears to care so much about Christians in Nigeria,” Adefarasin said. “Where was this passion when similar atrocities happened years ago? Nigerians have always borne their pain largely in silence, without global headlines.”

He called on the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to protect all citizens regardless of faith or background and to ensure that justice is served in all cases of violence.

Adefarasin also appealed to Nigerians to avoid divisive rhetoric, stressing that unity and truth are key to defeating insecurity.

“We must resist being used by foreign interests to tear ourselves apart,” he said. “Our focus should be on building a safe, just, and prosperous Nigeria for everyone.”
