I Can’t Guarantee Safety of Anyone Visiting Benue Without My Knowledge, Warns Gov Alia

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has warned that he cannot guarantee the safety of individuals and groups planning to visit the state without notifying his administration.

Speaking during a press interaction in Makurdi, Governor Alia stressed the need for coordination with the state government, especially in light of ongoing security challenges facing various parts of Benue.

“I want to make it clear that I cannot guarantee the safety of anyone visiting Benue without informing the state government. This is not about politics — it’s about the lives and safety of people coming into our territory,” the governor stated.

Benue State, which has experienced a series of attacks by armed groups and communal conflicts in recent years, remains on high alert as security agencies continue efforts to restore stability. Governor Alia noted that unannounced visits, especially by high-profile individuals, could pose logistical and security risks both to the visitors and residents.

According to him, the government must be aware of movements within the state in order to provide adequate protection and avoid unnecessary security breaches.

The statement has triggered varied reactions across political and civil society groups. While some have applauded the governor’s commitment to safety and order, others have raised concerns that the directive might be used to suppress opposition voices or limit civic space.

In response to such concerns, Governor Alia reaffirmed that his administration welcomes visitors, but insisted that due process and communication with state authorities must be observed.

“We are open to partnerships and visits from anyone with genuine intentions. But it must be done in a way that supports our collective goal of peace and stability,” he added.

As Benue continues to grapple with security concerns, the governor urged cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the state remains safe for residents and visitors alike.
