UEFA Rejects Claims of Super League Negotiation for New Champions League Format

UEFA has publicly refuted assertions by A22 Sports Management, the commercial promoter of the defunct European Super League, that the two bodies are actively “negotiating” a revised Champions League structure.

The European football governing body acknowledged holding meetings with A22 but stressed that they have yielded “no official results” and that there are “no plans to change the UEFA Champions League format.”

The proposed format, a significant departure from the original, highly controversial semi-closed Super League concept that caused an uproar in 2021, would see the 36 teams currently qualified for the Champions League placed into two groups of 18 clubs. The top teams from these groups would then advance to the Round of 32.

However, UEFA firmly denied that these discussions constituted formal negotiations aimed at altering its flagship club competition.

The organization stated that while its General Secretary, Theodore Theodoridis, had participated in several “public meetings” with A22 co-founder Anas Laghrari, these engagements remain inconclusive.

UEFA’s denial is underpinned by the fact that it has already implemented a new Champions League format set to commence from the 2024-25 season.

This new structure moves away from the traditional group stage toward a single “Swiss model” league phase.

The development follows a desire expressed by FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta—a long-time proponent of the Super League—for “an agreement with UEFA” to bring “peace” to the landscape of European football.

Laporta’s apparent shift was welcomed by Nasser al-Khelaifi, the President of Paris Saint-Germain and the chairman of the rebranded European Football Clubs (EFC), formerly the European Club Association.

Speaking at an EFC meeting in Rome, al-Khelaifi stated that Barcelona’s move toward rapprochement with the EFC and UEFA did not signify the end of the Super League, as “it was already dead before.”

Al-Khelaifi remained resolute in his support for the current structure, adding, “We don’t need other competitions; we already have the best competitions.”
