Air Traffic Controller’s Nap Strands Tourists Over Corsica

An air traffic controller’s unexpected nap on Monday night caused flight delays and left tourists stranded mid-air over Corsica.
Air Corsica Flight XK777, an Airbus A320neo traveling from Paris-Orly to Ajaccio, was forced to circle above the airport for about 18 minutes after the sole controller on duty failed to respond to communications.
Runway lights remained off during the delay.
With no response from the tower, the flight crew contacted airport firefighters and local police, who were able to wake the controller.
Once awake, the controller activated the runway lights and cleared the aircraft to land safely at 12:35 a.m., approximately 70 minutes later than scheduled.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries occurred and tests showed the controller was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Corsican Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into the incident to ensure such lapses do not occur in the future.
Passengers affected by the delay were offered compensation and rebooking options by the airline.
“This incident underscores the importance of strict operational protocols in air traffic control,” a spokesperson said. “Passenger safety remains our top priority.”
