Jamaican Sprinter, Seville Wins 100 Meters Gold at 2025 World Athletic Championship

Jamaican sprinter Oblique Seville triumphantly seized the gold medal in the men’s 100 metres at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Japan on Sunday, achieving a personal best of 9.77 seconds.
In a gripping final, he narrowly bested his fellow countryman Kishane Thompson and American Noah Lyles.
At 24 years of age, Seville, who had yet to secure a medal at any major global championship, surged ahead in the race’s latter half, claiming Jamaica’s first men’s 100m world title since Usain Bolt’s 2015 victory.
Bolt, the eight-time Olympic gold medallist and world-record holder, was present in the stands at Tokyo’s National Stadium, imbuing the event with historical significance.
Thompson, who entered the championships as the world leader with a 9.75-second run earlier in the year, captured the silver medal with a time of 9.82 seconds, securing a 1-2 finish for Jamaica.
Lyles, the reigning world champion and 2024 Olympic gold medallist, took bronze with a time of 9.89 seconds, marking his first defeat in a major 100m final since 2023.
The race occurred on the second day of the championships, which span from September 13-21 and feature athletes from over 200 nations.
Seville’s triumph unfolded amid high expectations for Jamaica’s sprint contingent, which has largely dominated the event over the past two decades, yet faced formidable competition from American and other international stars in recent years.
Seville’s journey to gold included a formidable semifinal performance earlier in the day, where he advanced with the fastest time among the qualifiers.
The championships continue with Lyles poised to defend his title in the 200m later in the week, where he has expressed confidence in delivering a “magical” performance.
