FG to Install CCTV on Third Mainland Bridge for Safety, Monitor Suicide Cases, Says Umahi

Following an upsurge in suicide cases on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, the Minister of Works and Housing, David Umahi said the federal government will install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across the bridge to monitor activities and deter acts of suicide.
Umahi made the revelation at a recent briefing, adding that the installation of the surveillance cameras aims to enhance public safety and to respond swiftly to cases where individuals attempt to end their own lives.
The development follows a string of tragic cases where individuals jumped off the bridge in attempted suicide, causing the authorities concern about the security of commuters as well as pedestrians.
The Third Mainland Bridge, a vital connecting link between the mainland and Lagos Island, has sadly gained notoriety due to the numerous cases of suicides that have occurred there over the years.
The government aims to discourage individuals from resorting to such desperate actions by the installation of the new surveillance system, as well as allowing the authorities to better monitor the bridge for any suspicious behavior.
Umahi’s announcement highlights the government’s commitment to tackling the alarming suicide rate, a growing mental health concern in the country. The move to install CCTV cameras is expected to provide real-time monitoring and a swift response by security agencies should an incident occur.
This is a part of the entire government efforts to enhance safety on public infrastructure, and the Third Mainland Bridge is one of the most important and busiest bridges in the country.
