Nottingham Forest Sack Nuno Espirito Santo, Appoint Ange Postecoglou as Successor
Nottingham Forest have parted ways with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, making him the first managerial casualty of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
His dismissal comes just two weeks after publicly acknowledging a strained relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Nuno, who took charge in December 2023, led Forest to top-flight safety before achieving a remarkable 7th-place finish in the 2024/25 campaign their highest league standing in three decades, securing Europa League qualification.
He was rewarded with a contract extension until 2028 in June.
However, the Portuguese coach’s position quickly unraveled this season. A poor run of form, including a 3–0 defeat to West Ham, coupled with growing boardroom tensions, hastened his exit.
Reports of disagreements over transfer policy and his reduced influence under new Global Head of Football, Edu, intensified speculation before the decision was made official.
In a statement released early Tuesday, the club said:
“Nottingham Forest Football Club confirms that, following recent circumstances, Nuno Espirito Santo has today been relieved of his duties as Head Coach. The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground. He will always hold a special place in our journey.”
Forest moved swiftly to appoint Ange Postecoglou, the former Tottenham Hotspur manager who recently guided Spurs to Europa League glory. The Australian signed a two-year deal and will take charge immediately, beginning with Forest’s upcoming Europa League fixture and their Premier League clash against Arsenal.
Owner Evangelos Marinakis praised the appointment, saying Postecoglou brings “experience, ambition, and a proven record of success at the highest levels.”
Postecoglou is expected to introduce a more attacking style of football, contrasting with Nuno’s pragmatic approach.
His arrival signals Forest’s intent to build on their European qualification and stabilize their league form.
Nuno, 50, leaves the City Ground after delivering both one of the club’s most memorable seasons in modern history and one of its most abrupt managerial exits.
