DSS Gives Sowore One-Week Ultimatum

The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a one-week ultimatum to human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, over a social media post deemed offensive to President Bola Tinubu.

In a letter dated September 7, the secret police accused Sowore of posting “false, malicious, and inciting” content on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on August 26.

The DSS alleged that the remarks were criminal in nature and derogatory to the person of the President.

The agency warned that failure by Sowore to retract the statement within the given timeframe would leave it with no option but to “explore all lawful means” to safeguard national security and maintain public order.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and vocal government critic, has often clashed with security agencies over his activism and social media commentary. It remains unclear whether he intends to comply with the directive.

The development has sparked debates on free speech and state power, with rights groups expected to weigh in on the DSS ultimatum in the coming days.
