Glitch on NELFUND Portal Delays Student Allowance Payments for Two Months
A technical glitch on the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) portal has disrupted the disbursement of monthly upkeep allowances, leaving thousands of student beneficiaries across tertiary institutions nationwide waiting for their stipends for roughly two months.
An internal source within NELFUND confirmed the operational hitch, stating that the agency is actively working to resolve the system failure and reconcile the affected transactions. The disruption has triggered widespread complaints from students who heavily rely on the monthly allowances to cover baseline living expenses such as feeding, transportation, and accommodation amid prevailing economic pressures.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has intervened in the matter, revealing that it has received countless reports of unpaid stipends from multiple campuses. NANS President Babatunde Akinteye stated that the association has gathered firm evidence showing the disbursements have been on hold for the past two months without clear accountability or explanations from the fund’s management.
Akinteye emphasized that the prolonged delay directly undermines the primary purpose of the presidential initiative, which was established to remove financial barriers and provide timely relief to students from low-income backgrounds.
In response to the growing anxiety across campuses, the student leadership called on NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, and Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele to intervene immediately and clear all outstanding arrears. While official comments regarding the exact timeline for a complete resolution remain unavailable, NELFUND is under mounting pressure from stakeholders to restore system integrity and resume payments to maintain public confidence in the administration’s flagship higher education intervention.
