National Librarian Cautions that Excessive Reliance on AI Threatens Writing Skills

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Dr. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, has cautioned against the excessive reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning, warning that it could weaken individuals’ writing and critical thinking abilities.

Dr. Anunobi gave the warning on Tuesday in Katsina during the 9th Annual Conference of National Librarians, State Librarians, and Chairmen of State Public Library Boards.

The conference, organised in collaboration with the Katsina State Government, brought together stakeholders to discuss the future of library services in Nigeria.

According to the National Librarian, while AI tools offer immense opportunities for research and knowledge access, their misuse may gradually erode essential human skills.

“We must strike a balance between technology and traditional learning methods. Overdependence on AI might make learners passive consumers of information rather than active creators of knowledge,” she said.

She urged educators, librarians, and policymakers to promote a learning culture that integrates technology without compromising the fundamental processes of reading, comprehension, and writing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference was “Repositioning Nigerian Public Libraries: Innovation, Inclusivity, Empowerment and Partnership.”

Declaring the conference open, Katsina State officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting public libraries as hubs of literacy, innovation, and community development.

The event featured discussions on strengthening partnerships between libraries, government institutions, and private stakeholders, with a focus on making libraries more accessible and relevant in the digital age.

Observers say Dr. Anunobi’s remarks reflect growing global concerns about the impact of AI on education, particularly fears that automation could weaken creativity, originality, and the ability to think independently.
