PAC Faults Reps Minority Leader Over Comments on Nigeria’s Insecurity

The Parliamentary Advocacy Centre (PAC) has criticised the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, over his recent remarks on Nigeria’s worsening security situation, describing them as politically driven and counterproductive to national efforts addressing insecurity.

Agbedi had recently called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend early political activities linked to the 2027 general elections and focus instead on tackling insecurity and economic hardship across the country. He also urged the President to prioritise citizens’ welfare and security over political considerations ahead of the next election cycle.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its President, Itodo Vincent, PAC said while concerns about insecurity were legitimate, public office holders must avoid politicising sensitive national issues.

The organisation said Agbedi’s comments appeared to turn security challenges into a partisan debate rather than contributing to solutions.

It further stated that Nigerians expect practical responses and constructive engagement from political leaders rather than rhetoric aimed at political advantage.

PAC noted that the country’s security challenges predate the current administration and require sustained collaboration among all stakeholders, including government institutions, security agencies, communities and political actors.

The group argued that addressing insecurity cannot be achieved through political confrontation, warning that divisive statements risk undermining collective efforts to restore stability.

It also faulted Agbedi’s reported suggestion that the President should suspend re-election-related activities or face accountability over insecurity, describing such a position as inappropriate for a senior legislator.

According to PAC, the Minority Leader’s intervention appeared to be influenced more by opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections than by genuine concern for national security.

The organisation stressed that security should not be used as a platform for political contest, adding that what the country needs at this time are cooperation, ideas and support for ongoing security reforms.

PAC expressed sympathy for victims of insecurity across the country, including those affected by banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and communal violence.

It called on political leaders across party lines to prioritise national interest, strengthen institutions and contribute to practical solutions capable of improving public safety and economic stability.

The group also urged opposition figures to focus on providing policy alternatives rather than engaging in early political campaigns.

PAC reaffirmed its support for government efforts to address insecurity and economic challenges, while urging unity and responsible leadership in confronting the country’s security crisis.
