Abiodun Charges Kingmakers to Ensure Fair Process in Selection of New Awujale

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on the Ijebu kingmakers to ensure a transparent and credible process in the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland, stressing the importance of fairness and unity in the succession exercise.
The governor, who spoke through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, maintained that the stool of the Awujale, one of the most revered traditional institutions in Nigeria must continue to command respect and dignity, hence the need for kingmakers to provide a level playing ground for all eligible contestants.
Abiodun emphasised that the succession process should reflect the cherished values of justice, equity, and inclusiveness that define the Ijebu people. He noted that the government would not interfere in the traditional procedure but would ensure that due process is followed in line with existing laws and customs.
“The Awujale throne is not only symbolic to the Ijebu nation but also a unifying institution for the entire state and beyond. It is therefore imperative that the process of succession strengthens, rather than divides, the people,” he said.
The governor also appealed for calm among contenders and their supporters, urging them to place the collective interest of Ijebuland above personal ambition.
The stool of the Awujale became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned for more than six decades and was widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most respected monarchs.
His passing has opened a new chapter in Ijebu history, with expectations high over who will succeed him.
Political observers and traditional council insiders have noted that the choice of the next Awujale will be keenly watched, given the influence the institution wields within and outside Ogun State.
