FG to Establish Dedicated GBV Safe Spaces Across All 774 LGAs

The Federal Government has announced plans to establish dedicated safe spaces across all 774 Local Government Areas of the country to significantly strengthen protection, legal assistance, and comprehensive support services for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The sweeping national initiative, driven by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs under Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, aims to standardize emergency response systems and guarantee uninterrupted access to trauma care at the grassroots level. By anchoring these protection centers directly within local government administrative structures, the government intends to bridge the historical gap between urban-centered rescue resources and vulnerable rural communities.

According to ministry officials, the decentralized safe spaces will act as institutional sanctuaries where survivors can access temporary shelter, medical screening, psychosocial counseling, and immediate referrals to law enforcement and legal aid clinics. The initiative is being deployed as a strategic response to alarming subnational data across the federation, including recent spikes in domestic and community violence metrics reported by various state-level human rights task forces.

The Ministry of Women Affairs emphasized that the rollout will be paired with the activation of the recently proposed Emergency Gender-Based Violence Response Fund. This dedicated financial mechanism is designed to ensure the operational stability and long-term sustainability of the centers, preventing funding bottlenecks from disrupting critical survivor care.

To maximize the impact of the initiative, the federal government is collaborating with civil society organizations, the Development Research and Projects Centre, and international partners to train local caseworkers and establish standardized, tech-driven referral networks. Ministry administrators noted that creating a safe, localized reporting environment remains the most effective way to dismantle the culture of silence surrounding domestic abuse, child exploitation, and harmful traditional practices in rural communities.
