First Lady Empowers Lagos Residents, Unveils Plans for Nationwide Elderly Support

?First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has expanded her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) food outreach to Lagos, distributing essential provisions to vulnerable families and individuals with disabilities.

Represented by Hajia Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President, the First Lady also unveiled plans for forthcoming nationwide projects aimed at supporting the elderly.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Special Assistant to the President on Media and ICT, Office of the Vice President, Kwapchi Bata Hamman, she articulated that the outreach was designed to alleviate the burdens on society’s most vulnerable members.

“This Food Outreach Scheme, part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI)’s Social Investment Scope, was inaugurated in March 2024 to provide essential food items to Persons with Disabilities and other vulnerable groups, thereby supporting their families,” she clarified.

The programme is funded by the Abdul-Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR) alongside an anonymous benefactor.

While 16 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have already reaped the benefits, Lagos has emerged as the latest recipient through the contribution of the anonymous donor.

Bayelsa and Sokoto have been designated as the subsequent states to benefit.

Supported by a N1 billion fund, the scheme will allocate N50,000 each to 500 women in every state and the FCT.

She further disclosed that the initiative would soon inaugurate projects to assist the elderly and more individuals with disabilities, while also launching “Flow with Confidence,” a programme to provide a year’s supply of sanitary pads to 370,000 schoolgirls nationwide.

“Our objective at RHI is to complement the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which aspires to support all Nigerians in thriving and achieving their goals, regardless of their condition or status,” the First Lady declared.

Receiving the food items on behalf of the beneficiaries, Lagos First Lady Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu described the intervention as timely and profoundly appreciated.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also lauded the initiative, observing that its direct impact on communities aligns with his administration’s THEMES+ agenda, which emphasizes social inclusion, health, and grassroots economic empowerment.

Beneficiaries included struggling families as well as individuals with disabilities, among them the blind and the deaf, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the relief.
