UNIZIK Bans Final-Year Students’ Exam Signing-Off Celebrations

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has announced an indefinite ban on the popular “signing-off” celebrations by final-year students, effective immediately.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, the university said the decision was taken following recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption of academic and administrative activities linked to the celebrations.

“The university management wishes to inform you that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the university premises.

This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events,” the statement partly read.

Dr. Okeke further stressed that the presence of unauthorised individuals who often join students during such activities poses a serious security threat to the campus community.

To ensure order, she said any student caught engaging in signing-off or similar activities would face severe disciplinary sanctions, including rustication.

She also warned that outsiders found within the university premises to support the activities would risk arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct and breach of peace.

The Registrar assured that the university remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment conducive to learning and academic excellence, adding that disruptive activities will not be tolerated.
