A Closer Look at Kanu Nwankwo’s Heart Surgery Funding

A recent claim by Gospel music crusader and business mogul, John CDO Ikeotuoye, has sparked controversy over the alleged refusal of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to help football legend, Kanu Nwankwo with his heart surgery. However, a closer examination of the facts reveals a different narrative.
Kanu Nwankwo was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect while playing for Inter Milan in 1996 and underwent successful surgery to correct the issue. He later established the Kanu Heart Foundation in 2000 to provide aid to underprivileged African children and young adults suffering from life-threatening heart conditions.
Bola Tinubu, the former Lagos State governor, donated seed money to the Kanu Heart Foundation in 2002, enabling the organization to perform free open-heart surgeries for children. Since its inception, the foundation has successfully sponsored 538 open-heart surgeries for Nigerians.
There is no credible evidence to support the claim that Peter Obi refused to help Kanu with his heart surgery. In fact, Kanu’s own statements suggest that Tinubu’s support was instrumental in establishing his foundation.
The Kanu Heart Foundation has made a significant impact in providing medical care to those in need, and its work continues to be felt across Africa. While controversy may surround certain claims, the foundation’s dedication to saving lives is undeniable.
