INEC Declares Bright Ngene Winner of Enugu South 1 State Constituency Rerun Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Bright Ngene of the Labour Party as the winner of the rerun election held in Enugu South 1 State Constituency.

Ngene secured the highest number of votes, defeating his closest rival, Sam Ngene of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by a margin of over 3,000 votes.

The rerun election was ordered by the Court of Appeal after the initial election results were nullified. The election had faced multiple disruptions, with four failed attempts to conduct the poll due to violence and thuggery.

The latest attempt on August 16 collapsed after polling officials failed to produce sensitive materials, including result sheets.

Interestingly, Ngene is currently remanded at the Enugu prison on the order of the Enugu Magistrate Court over a communal crisis reportedly hijacked by the state government. He was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in July 2024 over a N15 million community development fund scandal. Despite this, Ngene’s election victory has been confirmed by INEC.

INEC has announced that Certificates of Return will be presented to the elected candidates on Thursday, August 21, and Friday, August 22, 2025. The ceremony for National Assembly candidates will take place at the INEC National Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 3:00 pm, while State House of Assembly candidates will receive their certificates on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 11:00 am.
