NNPP Chieftain Slams INEC Over “Illegal” By-Elections

A prominent member of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Buba Galadima, has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting recent by-elections, labeling them “illegal” due to non-compliance with constitutional requirements.
Galadima stated that INEC’s failure to hold by-elections within three months of declared vacancies violates the law.
Galadima specifically pointed out that some by-elections were held two years after the vacancies occurred, citing an example in Kano where an election declared inconclusive by the APC in 2023 was only reconvened much later.
He warned that these elections could be nullified by the courts if challenged, emphasizing that the constitution clearly outlines the timeframe for conducting by-elections.
Regarding the Kano by-election, Galadima accused the All Progressives Congress of manipulation, claiming the NNPP won overwhelmingly in some constituencies but was denied victory.
He expressed dismay over the cancellation of results at the state level, questioning the legal basis for such actions.
Galadima lambasted Nigerian politicians, describing them as opportunists rather than genuine leaders. He also criticized INEC for failing to enforce discipline within the political system, suggesting the commission lacks the authority to ensure free and fair elections.
The NNPP stalwart praised Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, his party’s leader, as a strong political figure who led the party to victory in Kano. He dismissed rumors of Kwankwaso defecting to the ruling party as baseless.
Galadima further accused the Federal Government of using security agencies to destabilize Kano, particularly in the context of the emirate system controversy.
