Jigawa State Government Provides Free Cataract Surgery to 200 Citizens

The Jigawa State Government has successfully conducted a two-day free cataract surgery program for 200 less privileged individuals across the state.
The initiative, held at the Dutse General Hospital, aimed to address the pressing health challenge of cataract-related blindness and improve the quality of life for thousands of citizens.
Cataract remains a leading cause of blindness globally, with an estimated 18 million people affected worldwide. In Jigawa State, thousands of people are living with cataracts, and many more are at risk of developing the condition. The state government’s initiative is a timely intervention that seeks to provide relief to those who have been living with cataracts.
According to Nasiru Abubakar, Coordinator and Head of the Ophthalmic Department at the Dutse General Hospital, the program was a huge success. On the first day of the operation, 86 patients with cataracts were operated on and given glasses to improve their vision. Abubakar expressed confidence that the program would bring relief to those who had been living with cataracts, enabling them to regain their independence and resume their daily activities.
The patients who benefited from the program expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Jigawa State Government for the free services offered to them. Bashari Lawan, one of the patients, praised the governor’s care towards their eye health, saying,
“We appreciate the governor’s care towards our eye health. We are really grateful to the government for the free cataract surgery.”
Aminatu Sani, a 65-year-old cataract patient, shared her experience, saying, “I had been living with cataracts for years, and it had affected my daily life. But now, I can see clearly again, and I feel like a new person.” She added that the surgery had given her a new lease on life, enabling her to cook, clean, and take care of her grandchildren without difficulty.
The Jigawa State Government’s initiative demonstrates its commitment to providing healthcare services to those in need. The program is part of the government’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable populations.
