Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport to Ready for Commercial Operations as Ogun Awaits NCAA License

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Iperu-Remo will receive its official commercial operations license from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) this week. Abiodun said the airport, which has undergone full inspections, will be granted a unique operational approval not previously issued to any other Nigerian airport. Designed with a four-kilometre runway—among the longest in West Africa—the facility can accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747s and Airbus A330s. It is equipped with Category I approach lighting and Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI) for safe operations in varying weather conditions. Passenger flights are expected to connect Ogun with major cities, including Abuja and Port Harcourt, while at least two weekly cargo flights from London will target agricultural exports. Strategically located 80 kilometres from Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport and linked to Lagos seaports, the airport forms part of an integrated aerotropolis and free trade zone aimed at boosting trade, industry, and job creation. Charter operations began in late 2024, and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) completed runway checks and flight validation in April 2025, clearing the path for full licensing. Abiodun described the project as “a gateway to economic opportunities” for Ogun State, adding that it will serve as a viable alternative for diverted flights from Lagos.
