Edo 16: Mob Justice Taken Too Far

In a dastardly and horrific attack, vigilantes and youths in Uromi, Edo State, brutally killed 16 Northern Nigerian travelers on suspicion of kidnapping.

The victims, who were mostly Hausa hunters, were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah festival when they were ambushed and attacked by the mob.

The victims were rounded up and set ablaze, and some of the bodies were even reduced to ashes, as reported by eyewitnesses.

The government and human rights groups have condemned and protested against the attack, with most calling for mob justice to be brought to an end and the perpetrators to be prosecuted.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has also described the attack as “barbaric and condemnable”. He vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to book and has ordered the Commissioner of Police to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident.

“I can vouch that such persons who were involved in this indiscriminate violence will not be spared,” announced the Governor. “As of today, I speak, more than four people have been arrested for being involved in this inhumane occurrence.”

The episode has also given rise to worries regarding the threats that misinformation creates and the importance of security institutions being more engaged in preventing such incidents from being perpetrated.

REACTION

Human rights groups have condemned the attack, calling for an end to mob justice and prosecution of the perpetrators.

“This is a savage incident highlighting the dangers of mob justice, and the security agents’ role of being proactive in preventing them,” a Human Rights Watch representative stated.

ARRESTS

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack, and investigations are ongoing.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSE

The Edo State Government has promised to take decisive action to prevent such incidents in the future and to bring those responsible to justice.

“We will not tolerate such acts of violence and lawlessness in our state,” said the Governor. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held account
