Omoyele Sowore Released After Police Custody

Human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has regained his freedom after being detained by the Nigeria Police Force for nearly three days. Sowore confirmed his release on Facebook, describing his detention as “illegal and unjust”.

According to reports, Sowore was detained at the Force Headquarters in Abuja after honoring an invitation from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit. The police cited allegations of forgery and inciting public disturbance, but Sowore’s supporters argue that the summons lacked legal clarity.

During his detention, Sowore allegedly sustained a broken arm as a result of assault by police officers. His supporters staged protests in several states, including Lagos and Abuja, demanding his immediate release. The protests drew attention to the activist’s plight, with many criticizing the police handling of the case.

Following his release, Sowore posted on Facebook: “Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention. However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up!” The development comes hours after his supporters’ protests.

Sowore’s detention and subsequent release have sparked widespread condemnation of the Nigeria Police Force’s actions. Prominent figures, including Femi Falana, have demanded an investigation into the alleged assault on Sowore.
