PSG Parades Majority on List of Men’s Ballon d’Or Nominees

For the consecutive year, the 2025 Ballon d’Or will welcome a new laureate as Rodri did not secure a place among the 30 nominees, a roster predominantly featuring Paris Saint-Germain, unveiled on Thursday.

The Manchester City midfielder had already been sidelined due to a knee ligament injury, concluding his season, by the time he clinched the 2024 accolade last October.

Lionel Messi, who claimed the last of his eight trophies in 2023, is absent from the list, as is five-time champion Cristiano Ronaldo.

PSG, having triumphed in the Champions League with aplomb, boasts nine nominees.

Barcelona, victorious in both the Spanish league and cup, is represented by four players, including the youngest, Lamine Yamal, who has just turned 18, and the eldest, 36-year-old Robert Lewandowski.

Real Madrid, having boycotted the previous year’s ceremonies in protest of Rodri’s selection over Vinicius, has three nominees, including the Brazilian.

Napoli, rewarded for their Serie A triumph, secures one nomination with Scott McTominay, marking the first Scottish nominee since Ally McCoist in 1987.

Should he clinch the title, he would become the inaugural player from Diego Maradona’s former club to win the award and only the second Scot, following Denis Law in 1964.

The victor will be revealed on September 22 at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
