Labour Party Disowns Planned INEC Protest, Warns Against ‘Political Impostors’

The Labour Party has strongly disassociated itself from a planned protest scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), labelling the organisers as “impostors” and “political impersonators.”
In a statement released on Tuesday by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party clarified that it had no involvement in the proposed demonstration and condemned the use of its name for unauthorised political actions.
“The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to an invitation circulating in certain quarters regarding a purported protest… allegedly being organised by some unknown individuals purportedly operating under the banner of the Labour Party,” the statement read. “We wish to categorically state that the said protest is not sanctioned by the Labour Party.”
The party emphasised that those behind the protest are not recognised by its leadership and cautioned the public against being misled. “Anyone participating in or promoting this protest is doing so without the consent of the Labour Party and should be seen as an impostor,” it warned.
The statement also referenced the recent rejection by INEC of a list of candidates allegedly submitted by the former national chairman, Julius Abure, and his group for the upcoming national bye-elections and local council polls. The party described the move by Abure’s faction as illegitimate and reaffirmed that only the list authorised by the current leadership is valid.
The Labour Party urged its members and the general public to remain vigilant and disregard actions or communications not officially endorsed by the party’s legitimate organs.
