Sule Lamido Denies Factional Involvement with ADC, Reaffirms Loyalty to PDP

Former Governor of Jigawa State and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has dismissed claims suggesting his involvement in any factional move or defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, stating that he remains loyal to the party that gave him a political platform. Speaking in response to widespread speculation surrounding his support for the ADC-led opposition coalition, Lamido said his involvement in the coalition should not be misinterpreted as a shift in party allegiance. He explained that his support for the alliance is rooted in patriotism and the need to salvage Nigeria’s democracy from what he described as the failures of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “I have no plan to leave the PDP. This is the party that made me, and I remain committed to its ideals,” Lamido said. “My support for the coalition is based on principle and the urgent need to restore sanity to the country, not on partisan ambition.” Lamido had been among several political figures present at the unveiling of the ADC-led coalition, which aims to unite opposition voices against the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. His presence sparked assumptions that he and other PDP members might be plotting a defection or forging a new political front under the ADC platform. He clarified that while he supports the coalition’s objectives, it does not amount to abandoning the PDP. “Nigeria is facing unprecedented hardship and democratic decay. What we are doing is bigger than party loyalty—it’s about protecting the future of this country,” he said. The PDP has also responded to the matter through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who reiterated that the party has not entered into any coalition or merger talks with any political party. He noted that although individuals within the PDP may support broader democratic initiatives, the party remains focused on rebuilding and preparing for the next general elections. Lamido’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria’s political space is experiencing increased realignments among opposition elements seeking to mount a credible challenge to the APC in 2027. Despite his support for the coalition, Lamido emphasized that he would remain in the PDP and continue to work for its success. He urged party members to remain steadfast and resist the temptation to leave, stressing that unity within the PDP is essential to its survival and effectiveness as a national political platform
