IGP Engages Retired Police Officers Amid Protest Over Pension Scheme
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday met with a group of retired police officers protesting poor welfare and their inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The meeting, which took place at the Peacekeeping Hall of the Force Headquarters in Abuja, followed a dramatic protest earlier in the day at the National Assembly.
The retired officers, many of them elderly, braved the rain as they chanted anti-government songs and held placards demanding their exit from the CPS.
Unrelenting in their demands, the protesters later moved to the Force Headquarters, intensifying pressure on the police leadership and federal authorities to address their grievances.
The retired officers have long expressed dissatisfaction with the contributory pension arrangement, which they argue has subjected them to untold hardship and denied them the benefits they diligently earned during their years of service.
IGP Egbetokun’s intervention is seen as a move to calm tensions and open dialogue with the aggrieved ex-personnel, as pressure mounts on the government to review the current pension policy for security operatives.
